Map

Abbot Kinney started building his Venice of America in 1905, seeking to recreate the appearance and feel of Venice, Italy, in Southern California.

Of course, his Venice needed more than beautiful houses, arcade palaces and an amusement Pier. It needed a big lagoon and canals with gondoliers and arched bridges! The entire area between Abbot Kinney, Pacific, and Venice Blvd. were canals, and what is now Windward Circle was the Windward Swimming Laggon. The canals south of Venice Boulevard are the only one surviving. The rest were covered with dirt and paved to make space to the autombile, in 1929.

The Venice canals is one of the quiest and most enchanting places in Venice. Perfect for a late afternoon stroll, after a day at the beach!
